as an addendum to my last post, i should say that lack of investor interest is only a requirement for good forward returns. there is certainly no reason or law stipulating that lack of investor interest must go back to the level of the late 70s or early 40s just for the heck of it. all i am saying is that if you want to expect forward returns similar to those enjoyed by one investing in the late 70s or early 40s, you need to have a starting point which is similar to those times. one important element of such a starting point (when equities will by definition be extremely cheap) is that investor interest in (and capital available to) equities be very low.
