This is pretty old news in the trade press. Itanium is widely known as "Itanic". Nobody except Intel gives it a prayer of succeeding in the market place.

It's a complete break from 32-bit Intel x86 architecture, so it can't run any existing PC software. So it's going head-to-head with Sun Sparc and IBM PowerPC, starting with NO existing base of developed software. I have no idea why Intel ever thought this would succeed.

It's also 6 years late compared to the original 1996 schedule, but no big deal.

Intel will have to start over with a new processor which runs 32-bit x86 instructions together with new 64-bit ones. They will probably (humiliation of humiliations) have to license the 64-bit extensions from AMD, who did a good job of developing them.
