Re: Not quite the backwater you make them out to be. The population is 19 million (July 2001 estimate).

How did you arrive at the conclusion that I considered Australia to be a backwater? I do not. I had posted the Australian story on Bush's motive for the war on Iraq because I believe that the Australians are relatively objective observers of world politics because they do not have super power ambitions. No reason for them to be spinning stories for their national advantage.

Re: The Australian Government speaks for Australia, they were elected, the press was not. Who do they support?

Gee, thanks for pointing out that the Australian government spoke for Australia. I thought Kangaroos did. Or was it Koalas?

As for you brilliant observation that the Australian press was not elected, I think that you should retire from SI now that your best work is behind you.

What's the connection between a story in an Australian newspaper and whom the Australian government supports?

The triteness of your post is only exceeded by its insipidity.

Here is the link again to the Sydney Morning Herald article. Tell me what the Australian government has to do with this story?
Please note that this is only a rhetorical question.

What the White House really wants

September 28 2002

The unifying element in an often-contradictory US foreign policy is the dream of toppling OPEC and controlling the world oil market. And Iraq is the key, writes Paul McGeough from Riyadh.
