The first thing I would try is reinstalling Word2000. Your problems may be a byproduct of corruption. I agree with tc that doing everything in Word will probably eliminate the formatting problem you are getting.

I'd also suggest upgrading both of the machines you are using to W2000. 98 and ME are on their way out for good reasons.
