Hi Hawkmoon; Re: "Definitely a realistic scenario (except detonating a bomb in Nevada which would pretty much force our hand)."

Yeah, only the US is allowed to nuke Nevada.

Re: "But dropping a nuke on the US cannot help but kill or irradiate Americans with the fallout."

Maybe it didn't occur to you, but dropping bombs on Iraq cannot help but kill or wound Iraqis.

But seriously, in the event some "axis of evil" gets possession of nuclear weapons the US will have to find a way to deal with it peacefully. One option to contain Saddam at that stage would be to supply Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or Iran with nukes. Another option would be for those countries to allow the US to station soldiers (with nukes) in their territory.

I know these sound like outrageous options, but this is what the US, in fact, did in Europe for decades. The Germans had US nukes on their territory, and the French and British built their own. I would be in favor of such deployment under that circumstance (provided the host nation asked for it).

If Saddam did get nukes, his neighbors would very probably start looking for them as well (just like with Pakistan and India). So our supplying them would not actually contribute to "proliferation". All we'd be doing would be taking diplomatic, military and economic advantage of the inevitable.

I'd love to hear the thread's opinions on how the soccer moms would vote in the event that Saddam had nukes. And he wouldn't have to detonate it in Nevada. He's got plenty of desert right around where he is.
