>> Well, it's an historical fact that Nazi Germany declared war on us <<

we had been supplying the allies, so we were far from a neutral party to the war long before hitler declared war on us.

>> I'm presuming you would not have wanted America to ally itself with both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union <<

i think the best policy would have been to let germany and the soviets fight each other until they were exhausted. then the british could have stepped in. but they made that foolish war guarantee to poland and declared war on germany because chamberlain had his pride stepped on, thereby incurring hitler's wrath. if chamberlain had continued his policy of appeasement hitler would have turned his forces eastward and left britain alone. big mistake on britain's part.

the mistake of the united states was to support britain prior to entering the war. if we didn't support britain they would have either not declared war in the first place or they would have had to negotiate a peace with hitler after the fighting started. this would have allowed hitler to pursue his original goal all along which was to attack the soviets to the east. if i'm not mistaken poland is not on the way to britain or france.
