10:02 ET Chicago PMI weaker than expected - not good!
The Chicago PMI fell to 48.1% in Sep vs the 53.0% consensus and the August reading of 54.9%. The orders index fell to 49.2% from 55.8%. This leaves us with two conflicting reports ahead of the ISM - the Philly Fed index rebounded in Sep but Chicago reversed course and headed lower. Most likely these reports indicate that the manufacturing sector continues to slog along at something approximating zero growth. Stocks have taken another turn lower on this report: Dow -218; Nasdaq -36.
