I'm not sure I follow the logic of sniping being a problem with regard to the final prices to the seller. All sniping does is perhaps alter the final winner. People would be fools to get into bidding wars early on in an auction.

Anybody at anytime can put in the most they're willing to pay for the item and let it stand. If a sniper comes in at the last minute and beats them, then the seller gets a better price, and the person willing to pay the most wins.

I consider e-bay to be more of a silent auction than anything. When I bid on an item that I really want, I'll bid the max I'm willing to pay for it regardless of what the price is. Sometimes I'll be winning the auction up until I get sniped out of it. Oh well, someone was willing to pay more for it than I was. Fair enough.
