Brother had this to say on its web site and it did seem to help me get the camera to reformat the media. Thanks for your kind help. JFD

To format the Smart Media card from a Windows XP system you must ensure that you select the "Quick Format" option from Windows XP.

To do this, follow these steps:

Right click the Smart Media icon in "My Computer", the Smart Media icon should be displayed below the "Devices with Removeable Storage" heading.
Select the "Format..." option
The Format option box will apear, make sure that you select the "Quick Format" option in the "Format Options" section.
