Shootie, You gain success be beating others in a techincal way when you cannot out bid them in a money way. That is all sniping is....exploting a hole in the bidding caused by the inexorable approach of the end of the auction.

So if you cannot snipe and get an item cheaper by beating someone, why not take you ball and go home then.

Now plants(shills) do not work at all, because then end up being the winners too often and then the seller gets to pay the listing fee and the final value fee, and then he gets to sell it again.

In addition, I watch who bid against me and I scan their feedback and if I see a bunch of feedback on 1 guy, then I smell a rat and I drop out and let the shill buy it.
