Self-interest is pursuing our own advantage, whether it tickles the pleasure center to pursue it or not. Outwardly directed interest is acting for the benefit of other persons or things. It so happens that when we are motivated to do something, we experience satisfaction in pursuing it, and especially in accomplishing it, but that is incidental to the orientation of the behavior.
