it makes no sense to call an emotional response to doing something for others "self- interested".

I appreciate your frustration with the notion, but I don't find it at all difficult. I was 21 and newly married when I met Ms. Rand. Made a huge difference in my life. I had been struggling to reconcile the common notion that selfishness was bad with the fact that it's inherent in all of us and necessary, to boot. It was a huge relief to come around to the understanding that it was all about self interest and that an important component of self interest is how good we feel about ourselves when we do something "unselfish." Very fortuitous for the human race, I'd say. Much akin to the fact that sex is pleasurable. Not that my take is "right." But it sure works. And I've never encountered an event to disprove it.
