This is just a guess but it sounds like you have been hacked already. The undelivered mail could be returned or blocked spam from your msn account. Someone could be spoofing your email address. If this is the case MSN could have been notified and they could have cut you off as a spammer. I'd call msn about the problems.

DSL isn't any more hackable than dialup. It's just that dsl and cable are targeted because they are on all the time. You definitely need a firewall. ZoneAlarm is free and widely known as a very good firewall. If you have already been hacked be careful about allowing applications to connect to the internet. ZA will ask you if you want this program to connect. If you're not sure tell ZA no and see if you have any problems doing whatever you are trying. If whatever it is isn't working try it again and this time tell ZA that it's ok. If you're still unsure post it here and someone will try to advise you.

If you have been hacked (which could be the reason Norton icon is missing) I would suggest downloading and running a trojan detector as well. Here's a link to a well thought of trialware program that is easy to use. It has a thirty day trial period.
