Ira, I started with AT&T cable in June and still have the same modem the technician installed [an RCA modem].

Do you know why AT&T is giving you a new modem?

My initial installation - done by the technician - was modem and USB cable to computer. Very straightforward. Since then I changed it to modem to router and cable to NIC in desktop, followed by wireless laptop pc card installation.

I found the Linksys router quick installation sheet sufficient. One step at a time: first the desktop and when that worked, the laptop.

So, if you're convinced you need the new modem, you can do it. The sequence of powering up after the cables are all connected is important, but the Linksys sheet tells you.

Gottfried
