Hey, worst quarterly index performance since 1987. Best index YTD is the Russell 2500 Value, which I'd never heard of before, down 14.49%. Worst is the Naswacky, down 39.91% (way to hold the line at 40%, Naz <G>). Of course, we don't count commodities of any sort for you yellar dog fans.
For the past 5 years, the S&P 500 has averaged a negative 1.63%, and that includes the bubble years of 1997-early 2000. The Nasdaq a negatory 7.01% a year. The common wisdom of buy and hold indices was a bit too common and a bit too unwise.
Here's the tidbit that interested me the most. Again, most folks think that if you didn't own tech during the bubble, you were, as I was often called, a "looser." 10 years on the Nasdaq, a positive 7.01%. Long Treasury Bond Index, a positive 9.12%. But, according to academics, the Treasury bond buyers must have taken more risk to achieve that superior performance. Makes my stomach hurt from laughing. |
