I won't blame you for not recognizing a joke since not everyone has a sense of humor, but I am obviously using the future tense. Even so, a Green party candidate would not be a substitution, it would be a separate candidate from a separate party. Finally, since you may not be up on current events I should point out that the humor (if any) comes from the fact that the Democrats have been actively discouraging Green party candidates as potential ticket splitters.

For those who can follow subtle humor I was also considering the image of a "Fat Cat" polititian with a "spare tire" around the middle, suggesting that another candidate would be a more appropriate spare tire, ... but it was even too subtle for me.
