Can we talk about the idea of the "better" person?
I agree with you, basically, in what you say, but I'm not sure I agree with why you are saying it (and maybe that doesn't matter).

I think all the education you speak of, which increases tolerance, makes the world a more comfortable place for more people. But is that "better"? Only if you define the end as a better end. Some people think lives of hardship and punishment make you a "better" person. I don't happen to agree with those people, but I'm sure they do not care.

You do not say why "better" is better. And I'm not sure you can- except to say that life is more congenial for everyone, when a society is more tolerant. I agree with you that tolerance is a pleasant thing for most people, but I also recognize that for a few people it is as bad as intolerance would be for the majority. We sacrifice those people who would be happier with intolerance, to wallow in our tolerant society. And I'm ok with that. :-) Really I am. But I don't know if you can say any of it is "better" in any meaningful way- unless you want to use a utilitarian argument- that might get you there. maybe
