The more we guzzle, the more we’re exposed to geopolitical trouble—and that’s no fairy tale.

Karen, I'm totally in favor of energy conservation and alternative energy sources. I deplore the Bush energy policy.

But cutting oil consumption won't keep us out of geopolitical trouble. If the developed western nations cut oil consumption, the price will drop. But much of the slack will be taken up by the developing world gleefully buying cheaper oil, and the low-cost MidEast producers will remain profitable. Until all the oil in the MidEast is used up, or the price drops below production cost, the danger remains that madmen such as Saddam will use the oil wealth to fund terrorism, build up WMD arsenals, and threaten world stability.
