Even more interesting news ... IBM AS/400 Vs MicroSoft NT?

In contrast to a familiar sports paradigm, the AS/400's best chance of competing with Windows NT
may be to bolster its defense by going on the offensive. The key to IBM's success in the battle for
service, support and software infrastructure market share may be a re-drawing of the battle lines
against Microsoft, rather than a circling of the wagons.

And from the same magazine ... a different perspective on IBM and the 'NT in the Enterprise issue'

In the not-so-distant past, the one thing that was as inevitable as the tide was the struggle for desktop
domination between the IBM and Microsoft camps.

But now, with IBM's recently announced NT-in-the-enterprise message, which includes a lofty goal of
becoming a leading Windows NT systems and support provider by the end of 1998, IBM has publicly
stepped wholeheartedly into the Windows NT corner for the first time. Analysts, like the Aberdeen
Group Inc. (Boston), approve of the change.

In a report entitled "IBM's NT Strategy: Moving NT Upscale with Enterprise-grade Solutions,
Middleware and Services," Aberdeen examined IBM's overall strategy and found that the company is
ready to become a major market influence on enterprise-level Windows NT computing.

Tough to follow the twists & turns ... but it sure looks like some of what most people assumed about the market are beginning to change ... and probably some more interesting events are in the works too!
