Re: You'd prefer that we had left the kite-burning, women-flogging, TV-smashing, statue-exploding Taliban in power?
How could you possible interpret that from what I said? You're crazier than I thought.
The U.S. had the ability last spring to control the situation in Afghanistan and engage in a benign course of rebuilding the central government with suitable peace keeping forces, efforts to rebuild the infrastructure, efforts to rebuild the other institutions of civil society such as schools, universities, hospitals, water and sewerage systems, power systems, etc.
Instead, we made a deal with the Devil. We created a weakened central government, essentially allowing the regional warlords to have complete rule of the mob in the provinces. We betrayed the citizens of Afghanistan. We've created a monster. On purpose. It serves the ends of the CIA and the rogue elements of our government acting in collusion with our major energy corporations who will hire the U.S. Army and Air Force as a private military to further their ends of extracting the oil prize deeper in Central Asia.
We are completely, transparently cynical now about the claims that the U.S. cares a whit about "freedom and democracy". Now, we're transitioning to mean nothing but empire and conquest. Weakening any potential regime that might stand up to the will of the corporate elites on the way to total world domination.
It's not a New World Order. It's a New World Odor. Because it stinks.
