In Canada the government widely supports the arts in order to promote our unique Canada identity, but basically to prevent us getting swallowed by the U.S. Our National Gallery decided to subject their artistic point of view with a $1.8 million dollar purchase. I doubt Van Gogh ever considered hanging up his brushes because he could not get a government subsidy. I wonder what his art would have been like if he had received medical treatment and financial support? On Prozac he may have painted bright cheery scenes of flowers and painted bird houses instead of the images that made him immortal.
