In contrast, if one is the sort of parent who shows a great deal of interest in his children,
always helps them with homework, volunteers as a chaperone, goes out of his way to
sharing enriching experiences (like taking them to museums, zoos, historical sites, and so
forth), makes their friends welcome, and so on, one is a very good parent,

Interestingly, that myth is being punctured. In many cases, children are better served by making their own discoveries than by shepherded to them by parents.

Parents who are deeply involved in Little League have for quite some time been deemed responsible and model parents, but in reality they would have done a better job if they had handed the kids a few worn balls, bats, and gloves, made sure than had a safe field to play in, and let them loose on their own.

The things you list as blameworthy are, as far as I can see, entirely cultural. Those are things it would be contrary to the social norms to do or not to do in our society, but would be exactly the opposite in other societies.

And I notice that you slip in "duty" there at the end. So I take it that you consider leaving a tip a duty, not just a courtesy?
