Actually, most people agree on most things most of the time, assuming that they have a common culture and are not too far ensconced in a cultural ghetto. Controversy arises over a limited number of cases where the application of principle is not clear-cut. That is what mainstream opinion, including acceptable controversies, are made of. That is why elections are usually close, because the major parties make sure that their candidates have mainstream appeal. That is why, when a candidate like McGovern is put up, the vote becomes lopsided in favor of his opponent. That is why Libertarians rarely break the 5% barrier in elections, and the Communist Party at its height never had more than 100,000 members. That is why Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch are, surprisingly enough, good friends.......
