by the constant mutual fund mantra that stocks go up over time They get it wrong. Indices go up over time. Most companies fail, therefore their stocks fail as well. The thing that keeps indices going up is that failing companies are replaced by younger more successful ones all the time (sometimes in large numbers as we've seen recently), the indices are correcting. That and inflation ....
