Was in Gulfport, MS when Camille came through (in the service). Had duty that night, everyone evacuated to warehouses on the base. Radio reported @ 6PM that winds were gusting to 218mph before the machine crashed - at the mouth of the MS River. Had been through a number of 'canes being born & raised in FL, but I thought, 'Geez, that's how fast dragsters where going in the quarter mile'.

Result, storm surge well over 18', most of the base destroyed, including the warehouse we were in (5 killed).
House myself & 2 others were renting, right off Hwy 90, in view of the Gulf - gone.

Problem with 'canes in the Gulf is that the sea water has no where to disburse as it does on the east coast of FL.
