I don't think that if you asked people 500 years ago they would think it likely that the earth could support 6 billion people, or that the average standard of living for the world as a whole would be likely to approach what it is today.

I think it unlikely that the current generation or one that is to come real soon, will see an end to the enormous economic progress that mankind has had for hundreds of years.
