I also thought Perle's statements were out of line...
But one has to admit that Schroder did, in fact, bring it upon himself, as did the majority of the German people to whom he pandered in order to win this election.
So while I have much respect for people like yourself, Jochen, and your well thought out contributions here on FADG, I think that there's evidence of a somewhat disturbing undercurrent present in Germany and much of Europe.
It's not so much that Schroder and his cabinet minister said what they said, but that they were required to do so in order to cater to this different mindset in Germany solely in order to win the election.
Am I missing something?
I will tell you that Americans, IMO, are in a dangerous mindset after 9/11. I know that I personally am. I perceive that America is like who after getting "sucker punched" in a crowded bar, got up and kicked the @ss of the most obvious assailant... (Taliban/Al-Qaida).
And now we're locked and cocked to "unload" on anyone who even thinks about looking at us cross-eyed. And that includes anyone we think is pondering our future demise.
This is what that "European official" who commented about underestimating American "resolve", is talking about.. I perceive the "silent majority" of American politics, Joe6Pack if you will, is perfectly willing to see the US "drain the swamp", pave the land, and sell it to the highest bidder, if it means that it lessens any future opportunity for someone to directly attack us as they did on 9/11.
