Frank,

A question about wireless local loop:

My building in NYC has a policy against the drop cables and other exterior wiring. However, Verizon (in their typically bureaucratic and lazy fashion) won't install any additional phone lines into anybody's apartment via internal (inside the building) wiring. They claim to have a policy against running new phone cable around the inside of the building, and insist that the only way they will run additional phone lines is to run them from the punch-down block in the basement via the outside of the building, through a window, and into the apartment.

I recall that in the past several companies were working on wireless local loop systems for third world countries, where the cost of running twisted pair was seen as in impediment to rolling out phone services. I believe that a lot of these projects were canned as times became tougher. (I do know that this happened at Tellabs, which canned their wireless local loop program back in 1998 or 1997).

Are you aware of any wireless local loop installations in the New York area? In particular, it seems to me that a lot of buildings have policies against exterior drop wiring, and this application would be a natural way to get from the basement into individual apartments. Which (if any) equpt mfrs offer the necessary equipment? Are there any resources on the web which discuss a wireless local loop installation in a residential building?

Thanks for any insight you or your readers might offer!

Stuart
