The Cambodians were slaughtered by Communists, the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge were supported by the Communist government of North VietNam who were backed by the Soviets. They were also supported by Communists in Thailand who were backed by China. They did what Communists always do when they take over a country. They slaughtered intellectuals and everybody they thought might cause them trouble. It might be interesting to compare the percentage of the Cambodian population killed by the Khmer Rouge and the percentage of the Russian population killed by Lenin and Stalin. Blaming the US for the fall of Cambodia to Communist insurgents is like blaming a fireman for a fire.
