By about 1900, this had been codified in the tenets of Fundamentalism

Many of the major fundamentalist sects were offshoots of the Southern Babtist movement which was formed (split from national babtist movement) at the time of the civil war to find a religous justification for slavery. Twisting scripture to fit the bias of some leaders has become an art form in this movement. There is no titular head for this movement, all leadership is measured by influence, size of flock and collection plate. Evolution is just one of the subjects where some have tried to have their voice heard and so climb to a higher position on the circuit.
