either from the superior standpoint of our society

But just what MAKES our society superior? What if they think THEIR society is superior and we are at fault for not following THEIR practices? That's the issue. BOTH societies think their ways are right and superior. So on what basis do you say that ours is the superior one?

reasoning that the practice is futile, and not worth the harm done.

It may not be futile from their point of view. Probably isn't, or they would have abandoned it as not worth the effort. And harm is, again, a societal construct, not an absolute value. To our society, it may be harm. To theirs, it may be benefit. And again, either each society must be accepted as right for itself, or you must turn to an external authority, which you must identify.
