Asyst Technologies (ASYT: news, chart, profile) sank more than 16 percent after Thomas Weisel initiated coverage of the stock with a "market perform" rating, saying that it thinks the near-term financial performance in the semiconductor capital equipment sector will be "somewhat lackluster." In light of this environment, the firm doesn't see a near-term catalyst for "meaningful" price appreciation in Asyst shares. "The current pause in the cycle is likely to keep the company earnings negative through next year, which will likely lead to book value deterioration, and near term share price pressure," it said in a note to clients.
