June 17, 2002 Syria is preparing to start production of a new extended-range version of its 'Scud C' ballistic missile, according to US and Israeli defense officials.

The assembly line for the weapon has been completed and it is expected that up to 30 missiles a year could be produced.

Israel's neighbour has received technical assistance from North Korea and Iran is also believed to be providing liquid-fuel technology and material.

The new version was flight-tested only once, in September 2000, when it completed a successful launch.

The missile has a range of 450 miles, through extra fuel carried in the increased diameter fuselage.

It is also capable of carrying a 1,500 pound warhead that separates after burn-out, allowing for greater stability and improved accuracy. It has been designed to carry biological and chemical weapons, although Syria currently does not produce biological agents.
