Like the Jews? They did that and survived, but they finally had to form the state of Israel in order to prosper. So a teensy little empire is good, no? The thing that is different here, as you obviously have forgotten, is that our country is founded on the bedrock of principle and constitution whereas all the cases you mention were founded on the sands of personality. Our country has no desire to form an empire. We simply want to be safe and the only way to do that is to speak softly and carry a big stick.
