So the norm is fine? Because genital mutilation, as already discussed is the norm, in other parts of the world. Sometimes the norm is not good enough. And then the law changes. When the law changes like that, there is usually a reason. And while not everyone was beating their children, it was very common to see whipping marks and bruises on children, even when I was a child. People were still beating with belts in my neighborhood- and there were laws, they just weren't enforced the way they are now. Try to imagine what it was like before laws. I don't know if you've read much about the orphan trains in Canada. But some of the stories from those children give you a small insight into what abuse was like before laws. And of course many autobiographies from the past mention the abuse the author suffered at the hands of his or her parents. I'm sure you must have some knowledge of this.
