It is not quite true that one needn't answer for it, of course, since a teacher or parent has a right to call your behavior into question, and others have a right to think ill of you, and socially stigmatize you, for example, by avoiding your company. Otherwise, one is free as a bird, I guess. In any event, "duty" merely refers to something you "should do", regardless of the source of the obligation. Some duties are relatively trivial, but still one may be criticized, or at least be made the butt of a joke, because of them. They are not all equal. But they all have the same characteristic: they are minimal standards of behavior, and one may be criticized, to a greater or lesser extent, for not not upholding them........ |
