I'll save you some money, and some time. I just subscribed to The Economist, and searched out the article, using the search terms "bin Laden" AND CIA AND Afghanistan AND training. It turned up six articles. This is probably the one you are referring to: "A bitter harvest", Sep 15th 2001.

Turns out I was right, the article does NOT state that the CIA gave bin Laden money or training.

It says the usual, that the CIA funded and trained the mujahideen, and that bin Laden fought with the mujuahideen.

If you don't believe me, go to the library or pay for your own subscription. I don't usually post paid subscription articles online, and in your case, I see no reason to make an exception.
