I read Marx in High School on my own because I was curious about Socialism and Communism. I got about halfway through Das Capital and figured it would never work because it didn't respect people's need to better themselves. Who wants to live life with only the basics? Recognizing value in Socialism doesn't mean embracing Authoritarian Socialism. I didn't want unbridled capitalism such as I saw in the back-streets of Hong Kong. Seeing a pathetic quadruple amputee who is 70 years old selling pencils to keep from starving does that kind of thing to you if you have any compassion.
