So i would expect other factors are at work as well. The European social democracies are more "social" than ours is so i think there's some statism taking the place of religion. And since those states put a high value on mainstream science in education whereas some of our fundamentalist religions don't, you have a case for the discrepancies in both religiosity and belief in the validity of evolution, age of the Earth, etc..
