As I wrote, I believe that "there are times when one ought to apologize, if one is not a animal of the field, but part of the social contract, imo."
And I'd say that in the "social contract" universe, as opposed to animal-of-the-field, or feral creature, universe, not letting a door slam on the next person through is owed to our fellow creature, the person behind us; is a thing due to him or her by simple virtue of his or her being our fellow creature, and under the social contract to which all who would be considered civilized (tautologically) are signatories; is one due by custom, also; and that to be considered a civilized member of the society, one must, that is, ought to, to honor that custom.
that which is owing to anyone
a thing due
a payment due and enforced by .... custom
that which one ought to do
So in the ways I've mentioned, I believe creatures ought not to (ie have a duty not to) let doors slam in each other's face.
The party should be ashamed, when you remind him/her with your "Thank you!" what has occurred, because s/he has eschewed his/her duty as a party to the social contract, and has behaved not as s/he ought to behave, to a fellow creature, but has behaved, instead, like a feral creature.
I think if s/he did it inadvertently, s/he will apologize, thus separating him or herself from citizenship in the universe of the feral. |
