semi- senility is improving it a little bit- she can't keep the records as well anymore :-)

I'll tell you a funny story. I am an only child of elderly parents, so when I got married my parents had given LOTS of gifts to the children of their friends, who had gotten married before I did. My mother figured the gifts would reflect the fact that in many cases she had given 3 or 4 gifts to a family, whereas they would only be giving one gift to our family in "exchange". Needless to say she was disappointed. But she could REMEMBER it all. She still can remember some of it. Every so often she'll mention one of her friends has died, and she may say "You know, the one who gave you the crock pot for your wedding. And to THINK I gave their girls Waterford......" I have to make sympathetic noises, it is my duty. But what I really want to do is giggle. Because it strikes me as very funny. What I give, I give because it gives me pleasure. I don't weigh up the gifts of my friends to try to find equality. I tried that as a teenager when I was trying to integrate the value system of my parents. I found I had to reject their systems for my own happiness.
