So when companies seek to eliminate, let's say, one $50,000 job (with benefits) and contract out the work for $30,000 (no benefits) ... doesn't that have a negative impact on the American middle class?
Such, of course, improves the company's bottom line, but doesn't this practice (if multiplied X number of times) weaken the economic and even moral fabric of American society?

No it has a positive benefit. The primary purpose of a business is to maximize a return for it's owners. By doing so, it strengthens its ability to thrive, compete and grow. In the long run it insures its long term viability and typically provides more jobs into the future. Firms that are too paternalistic generally fail.

However, I do think you can make a very case that corporations should seek to do right by their employees. Firms should seek to engender loyalty as happy and motivated employees are a valuable asset. Often situations as you describe can be handled via attrition versus layoffs.

Overall, productivity gains and good management of expenses helps insure jobs.
