This is not about party politics to me -- it is about policy and leadership. I thought Bush senior really did a remarkable job of coalition-building. All countries have their issues -- as you correctly point out. But that does not rule out building an effective coalition.

Wasn't implying party politics, just political style, period. Bush Sr. was a flesh presser and an ass-kisser as well, to go along with the first post. :)

Bush Jr is a bit more... abrupt... in stating our interests. If others can't be brought on board, this Administration assumes they can be damned and be left on the wharf, we're setting sail. Which isn't altogether bad. If we recognize that Europe and the rest of the world are motivated by their own self-interests, they must be prepared to recognize we are motivated by ours as well, and those interests are not always going to coincide. The difference is this Administration is willing to see that and say "sorry to hear that, maybe we'll meet in the middle next time" and move on. Our allies don't appreciate that we aren't subsuming our interests for theirs, which was the hallmark of the Cold War Atlantic alliance.
