I can't imagine teaching it so that the students inferred anything else from the subject matter. I agree with you about their ideas. But I've no idea what you thought you were reacting to, since I never saw anyone say they WERE as good as anyone else's ideas. Except perhaps if you are expecting the professor to say they are objectively wrong- which, IMO, is a mistake, about anything.
