29% Of Israeli Dead Are Females, Versus 2.6% Of Arab Dead
(DFJ-Jul/Aug '02) In the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, an interesting statistic has emerged. Twenty-nine percent of Israelis killed are female, while only 2.6 percent of the Palestinians killed are female.
This is a graphic illustration of the fact that Israel is dealing with military targets, and most of the casualties are men or boys who are wielding weapons. In contrast, the Palestinians target civilians, resulting in a higher percentage of killed women and children.
Between September 30, 2000 and May 30, 2002, thirty-four Palestinian females have been killed out of 1,293 Palestinian deaths - 2.63%.
Between September 30, 2000 and May 30, 2002, 146 Israeli females have been killed out of a total of 501 Israelis deaths - 29%. Nine were female soldiers, none of which were on duty (David and Sara Bedein, Israel Resource News).
In a related story, the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism reports that the numbers of dead in the Al-Aqsa Intifada (c. 1450 Palestinians and 525 Israelis) present a lopsided picture. But, the numbers lump the combatants with noncombatants, and only when the two are segregated, can you get the real picture of the impact on civilians.
First of all, the Palestinian numbers include 185 Palestinian "collaborators" killed by other Palestinians - 1 out of every 8 deaths.
Secondly, Israel is responsible for 568 Palestinian noncombatant deaths, while the Palestinians have targeted 420 Israelis dead. Over 50% of the Palestinians killed were actively involved in fighting - and this does not include stone-throwers and "unknown-cause" deaths.
On the Israel side, almost 80% of those killed have been non-combatants. While Israelis account for only about 25% of the total "intifada" fatalities, they represent about 40% of the noncombatant victims.
Also, Palestinian noncombatants killed were at random, while the majority of the Israeli noncombatant dead have been concentrated in groups, as the result of Palestinian homicide bombers.
