For people who have grown up in safe environments, and who have had a religious education but ignored it, because it was "crap", when suddenly confronted with immediate danger beyond their control, religion is something they immediately turn to.

i think you're still generalizing -g-

religion is a personal choice and a pasttime, like baseball, but has killed many more people so imo it is a bad thing. it is a matter of convenience, closed mindedness, and laziness that most people choose something someone they never knew thought up, for resons only know to them at the time, as their "religion". obviously, the business infrastructure that organized religion has in place keeps the fire fueled. i think the idols chosen by the masses should be looked at with skepticism, unless you want to be on the side of the mediocre majority.
