The idea that Tip O'Neil was responsible for the Reagan deficit is about the funniest thing I have read in weeks. It was Reagan's cherished programs that ballooned the spending, not any echo of the New Deal. It was Reagan's elimination of progressive taxes that meant the burdon had to be carried by social security taxes, paid primarily by the working middle and lower middle class. Of course it's still Junior George's inspiration to just eliminate retirement for those not of the right fraternaty.
