Living even in a repressive regime is not a problem for most people. Just keep your nose clean and everything works out fine for you.

Not what I heard first hand from a number of the expatriates from the eastern block who were naturalized French citizens who I worked with in France.

You just better believe that the most minor every day dispute with a neighbor, a shop keeper, a minor traffic incident, any of the things that life can sometimes be made up of can turn into truly terrifying interactions with the police, and we're not talking about the US judicial system. Denunciations, the whole gamut of aberrant behavior becomes a commonplace fear woven into daily life.

I think you entertain some fantasies about life in some parts of the world given a few of these remarks of yours.
