You post some silly stuff, but this is particularly silly, Scott.

For all his vicious nature, he has shown no interest in building an empire. In any case, that would be an impossibility for Iraq, which has just 23 million people and is surrounded by bigger nations.

I suggest you tell that to the Iranians and the Kuwaitis. What did he invade them for, except to build an empire? As for "surrounded by bigger nations". Turkey is bigger and stronger. Iran is bigger. Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and all the Gulf emirates are smaller. Much smaller. And most of them have oil. And if you have actually listened to Saddam in the last ten years (something Chapman has not done, clearly) then you know that it is hegemony over the Gulf and its oil supplies that interest him. He has proclaimed the Gulf War a victory, himself the only Arab lead to stand firm against the Great Satan, and promised a restored caliphate in Baghdad over and over -- what for, if he has no foreign ambitions?
