I'm just speculating....but when the carriers have talked about latency, they have usually used the word "initialization". I always took that to mean that the first time you tried to contact the other people in your group it would take a couple of seconds. After that, the delay would be nominal.

I really don't know for sure, but there is a delay each and every time the button is pushed and released with Nextel albeit shorter after the initial setup. So, maybe you are correct.

I would assume that you could set it up so that you hit the button once to start the conversation (wait 5 seconds) and then hit the button at the end of the conversation.

With Nextel, the button needs to be depressed at all times when speaking. The other party does not need to hold the button to listen.

I have no idea how PTT is designed to operate because all I have heard are very non specific claims. I think if it was easy and inexpensive to implement, the competition would have done it long ago. According to Nextel, It's not easy nor cheap and the lack of competitors to DC seems to be congruent with this statement.

We know Nextel does not use landlines or pay interconnection fees for their DC, but I have yet to read any statements by the PTT competitors on this issue. I'm guessing to provide a true nationwide PTT service that truely competes with Nextel, it's not going to come cheap and this could become the prohibitive factor.

Much of what I said is just speculation, if anyone has any meat to put on them bones maybe we can all learn something.
